PAYDAY!

Celebrating an e-brake from Big Mac, here is the Friday offering:

Owens tries to ruin the Eagles …This dude is insane.

"If Donovan wasn't hurt our record would probably be better," Owens said Thursday night.

ESPN analyst Michael Irvin recently said the Eagles would be undefeated if Favre were the starting quarterback.

Asked for his thoughts on Irvin's comment, Owens said: "That's a good assessment, I would agree with that, just with what [Favre] brings to the table.

"A number of commentators will say he's a warrior, he's played with injuries. I feel like him being knowledgeable about the quarterback position, I feel like we'd probably be in a better situation."

Now, whether that is true or not, why would you say it? What possible productive result could emerge from that? Dude is freaking out of his mind. Shaq and Kobe without the rings? Look for a Keyshawn-type exit sometime soon…

Finly on the curse of the cash

He called the Mavs' contract, which paid him approximately $50 million over the last four years, a "blessing and a curse."

"My contract called for me to be a superstar, and I wanted that role, but the coaching staff didn't want me in that role," Finley said. "They're paying me this money to be a superstar, but the coaching staff is holding me back, for legitimate reasons. But from the outside looking in as a fan and media, you don't see that.

"You see Finley making all this money and doing nothing. If you look at the big picture, the coaching staff was holding me back so other players could flourish. I just wanted to be a team guy. I could have easily been selfish and talked bad about everybody, but that wasn't me."

I guess I am late to the dance on this, but Cuban versus Barkley and Smith is pretty amusing.

Cuban blog post #1

Only downer of the night was listening to the idiots on TNT after the game. Its not unusual if we win a TNT game for us to turn it on in the locker room and hear what Charles, Kenny and co have to say. They havent gotten any better.

Let me just say this. There is a reason why Kenny and Charles havent gotten head coaching jobs. THere is more to running a team these days then thinking you know what you are talking about. Kenny, if you want to bust on us for switching on the pick and roll, get some stats to back it up. We track conversion rates on everything we do. High pick and roll, elbow pick and roll, whatever, we track it. If its not working Kenny, we adjust. I know that is probably a new concept to you and Charlie B, but thats the NBA of 2006. With all that money you guys make (hey if you are going to talk salaries, lets see how you like it), go out and hire some kids to track what actually happens in a game rather than having TNT bring in kids to go out and get donuts.

And then here is the latest …Do you think it is tough to draw Cuban offsides?

In the game of the week, Tech hosts A&M tomorrow night. Tech is a favorite by more than two touchdowns! Houston Chronicle gets Coop to ponder Tech vs. Aggies for who is #2 in the state?

As a longtime sports radio personality in Texas, Chuck Cooperstein can come up with a clever way to discuss anything.

But he doesn't mince words when the subject is Texas Tech's football program overtaking Texas A&M for the No. 2 spot in the state behind Texas.

"I would disagree with that strongly," Cooperstein said. "I know Tech is doing pretty well out in Lubbock right now, but when Tech can put 85,000 people into a football stadium to watch them play then maybe we can revisit that.

"Tech has plenty of money, and they've spent that money, but they don't have the money the Aggies have."

But the results on the field, especially the last 10 years, suggest the Red Raiders have been able to do more with less.

Texas Tech has won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two Big 12 South schools and has won five in a row against the Aggies in Lubbock during that time.
When the 5-3 Aggies venture into Jones SBC Stadium on Saturday for the 63rd installment of this game, they'll do so as 16-point underdogs.

Certainly, the pendulum appears to be swinging in the Raiders' favor these days.
"If you are just strictly looking at the state of the program, maybe you can make that argument," Cooperstein said. "But overall, if you go outside of the state of Texas and ask people what is the second football school in Texas, I would think that just about all of them would say A&M.

Meanwhile, Sherrington tackles the Coach Fran stuff

He's a good coach. Organized, driven, inventive. Proved it at several stops, notably TCU. And most Texas media figured it was only a matter of time before he did the same at A&M.

Only it hasn't happened. Certainly not this season. He's nearly three years into his dream job, working under a deal that pays him $2 million a year through 2012, and what have the Aggies gotten for their money?

A 16-16 record. And it doesn't look like the returns will be any better any time soon.

The Aggies are on the road against Tech and Oklahoma and finish at home against Texas, a bitter rival making an emphatic case for the Rose Bowl.

Chances are good A&M ends up 5-6. And that'd make two losing seasons in Franchione's first three.

A little perspective: R.C. Slocum coached 14 seasons at A&M and never had a losing record.

Times are different. Slocum coached a little more than half his A&M days in the old Southwest Conference, and the Big 12 is a tougher league.

Or at least it was until this season. And being unable to compete in a not-so-Big 12 only makes matters worse.

Mavs track refs numbers

After getting pounded 4-1 by Middlesboro, ManU panics, And Ruud says this is the worst he has known

“We're not playing well. We have difficulty keeping the ball. We're not having flowing attacks. We don't play in the opponents' half, with crosses coming in, second balls won. We're not applying pressure on our opponents. Our confidence seems to be down. Sometimes we hold back when we have to go for it."

Too bad. Poor United.

And, bagofnothing.com has Revenge of the Sith Easter Eggs

Finally, the Lewisville fighting Vikings, our football team, in the 7-8 year old age bracket, plays the city championship tomorrow at high noon in Lewisville’s Lake Park. Bring the title home, boys.

PS: I found this gold nugget on the new bobanddan.net forum:

Cuban is a moron. The only person easier to bait into an assinine argument is Dan McDowell.

Tech is light years ahead of the Aggie right now.

And Coop should have mentioned that A&M hasn't drawn 85,000 consistently for years... in fact, they have had very few Sell outs. For that program, that is embarrassing.

what is cuban doing? now even if the mavs do start playing well, we're gonna have to continue hearing the sh** from those clowns all year. and what's with that stupid blue jacket? he is such a beating.....

i can't wait for the 4-4 eagles to take another beating from the cowboys. this is just getting better and better. we're hearing all this stuff about how t.o. will not be back with the eagles next year, but where who wants to take on this cancer? does anyone think that simply paying him will shut him up? he destroyed that 49ers team, and now he's destroying the eagles. he is a sorry human being, but i must thank him for ruining those two teams...

congrats to dan on the e-brake...

we need a link for the usc prank!!!

After further review, perhaps we should take it easy on old big Bill Dewayne Parcells. Yes he did swat at one of his assistants but thats nothing compaired to how Dan treats producers. Hey Dan take it easy buddy, do you realize that you are forcing listeners to like Gribble and to take his side. Is Dan become the T.O. of the Ticket? While those of us who love Bad Radio hate the thought that 1/2 of the show is cancer, the proof is there!

you guys need to lay off cuban, he is acting the way any of us would probably when confronted with criticism from 2 guys who sit on their asses and watch a couple games a week. cuban watches them all, and while he might know everything in the world of baseketball, he is atleast willing to try anything it takes to win. you guys who bash cuban obvioulsy dont remeber the days of 11 and 13 WIN SEASONS for christ sakes. i dont love him, but holy crap, what can he do to get a brake. i hate the fact they wont win a title, but would you rather them be the rangers and just quit trying. i hated losing to the yankees every year in the playoffs as a ranger fan, but give me that every year as opposed to the not even getting there. we just need to appreciate pretty good basketball, and hope they can catch lightning in a bottle next year with a little more development in our young players.

I'm sorry, but Cuban is an annoying idiot. If he knew how to keep his mouth shut, he wouldn't be getting criticized on national TV all of the time. As for the #2 team in Texas, there is no doubt it's Texas Tech right now. The scoreboard over the last 10 years proves that. I don't care how many people you draw to your games, it's the W's that count.

not all of us would act the way he does. he obviously has a strong desire to win, which every mavs fan likes about him, but there is a difference btwn. taking care of his players/building a title contender and ripping into anyone that criticizes the team. he sounded so stupid the day he got into it w/ junior miller, only now admitting that "defense is the way to go".

i clearly remember those terrible teams in the early 90s. i'm glad he's the owner of the team, but he really is becoming a beating. i like his passion for the team, as most mavs fans do, but why is he constantly needing to be the center of attention? it was funny and entertaining when he did this type of stuff when he first bought the team, and got everyone excited about maverick basketball, but now it's just old and tiresome....

Yes, Cuban is easily pulled offsides but not as easily as the languishing little man syndromed Tech fan. Both are on the Blog today, that insures Gold - Thanks Bob.

don't forget t.o.

Bob.. a few thoughts

Turco... the problem. Did we take for granted what we had when we had it? Eddie the Eagle was great because he was relentless in the net, he was intimidating, he was a dominator that was the REASON we were a championship hockey team.
Turco brings none of that to the table. He is getting worse and worse the longer he is here. Bring a veteran in to right the ship and yell at this underachieving team. We love Modano, but he is not vocal. Turco; great dude to have a few beers with, but not a difference maker.

Cuban: Brought the Mavericks out of the depths of hell. (thanks). Now he is a cartoon character and an embarrasment. Every time he does something, I always ask myself, would Jerry Jones (the best owner in this town) do that. OF COURSE NOT. Stop embarrassing yourself Mark. grow up

Big Mac.. love you

Bob,
Just becuase Bobanddan.net has a new layout doesnt mean that you dont have to update it everyday. I try to plan my lunch break around the beating of Hansen and the Parcells presser and I like to know the schedule of the show.

Thank you,
P1 Mike

Could a case be made for TCU as Texas' No. 3 team?

As a former Dallasite, I can say that no one outside of Dallas takes the Mavs seriously, and it's as much because of their defensive liabilities as Mark Cuban's inability to control himself. He undermines every good thing he does by acting like an idiot on the sidelines, in interviews, and online.

Would you rather Tom Hicks own the team? I will put up with his shenanigans as long as he is determined to put a winner on the floor every night. bottom line.

What happened with Dan and the e-brake? I must have missed it.

I think the people of Tech will be perfectly happy being the so called "third" team in the state forever and going to Cotton Bowls every year. The bottom line is that Lubbock is in the middle of the damn desert and 5 hours from everywhere. It is a miracle that Leach has been able to consistently do the job that he is done, on the field and recruiting.

And next year at Amon Carter, Tech will once again show TCU why they were not invited to the Big XII and the MWC does not deserve an automatic berth. Party on.

I was shocked to see the posts on Cuban's blog. Most were critical of him. Usually it is full of people telling him he is a genius - the kind of guys who would tell him his hair looks good.

As long as everyone agrees TEXAS is #1 - I don't care who is #2. I do think it is funny that Fran is failing. Just so Rhyner will keep quite.

Anonymous said...

There are a lot of people both inside and outside of Texas enjoying Fran's struggles. Here's hoping Tech beats them by 50 tomorrow night.

Finley will be missed by this team on and off the court. I will be in attendance on Saturday night and will give Finley a standing O, you can count on that.

Let's get some weekend picks going here. I'll take...

Tech (-16.5) over A&M
Texas (-28.5) over Baylor
Colorado (-12.5) over Mizzou
Miami (+6.5) over Va Tech (I think Tech will win outright but not cover)

I don't have a problem at all with what Cuban said about Kenny and Charles. They keep pushing out the tired old meme that teams like Dallas and Phoenix don't play any defense after...

1. Dallas hired a coach who was considered a defensive-minded point guard during his playing days.

2. Dallas ditched a player who was renowned for being a below average defender in favor of Doug Christie. Granted, he's lost a step over the past few years. But he'll still be an improvement on the defensive end over Fin.

3. Phoenix signed Raja Bell in the off-season to help with their defense.

I would think that players like Kenny and Charles would understand that a defensive mindset cannot be instilled in a team overnight. Especially when that team is the offensive-oriented Mavericks.

It takes time. And like Cuban said, this is a work in progress meant to better prepare this team to go deep into the playoffs in May and possibly June (if certain breaks go the Mavs way).

WHAT has happened to bobanddan.net? It's been looking pretty horrible the last few days. Where's Grubes? Doesn't he know how to fix that crap? Come on, guys.

Anonymous said...

those guys on tnt say what they do, b/c it is mostly true. i'm as big a mavs fan as there is, but the stigma that's been attached to the mavs also will not go away overnight. there's no need to rip on those guys, b/c when the mavs actually do play good defense and shut down teams, i'm sure they will call it as such. cuban even went on the air last year on the ticket and sparred with craig miller for 20 minutes about this very topic. they may be on track to get better defensively, but cuban needs to simmer down.

and let's not kid ourselves about doug christie, the guy is old and his skills are not what they were when he was in sacramento. raja bell would have been a much better fit here.

bobanddan.net is under construction. they've got some intern kid working on revamping it...

Hmm, looks like the BCS had it right all along after all. And who was saying they'd rather have Marcus Vick than Vince Young??? You might want to seriously reconsider.
